Previous IssueStifle trauma LH - (14/04/2008) Intermittent Lameness noticed 3 months prior to date - Diagnostic arthroscopy (key hole surgery) of LH femeropatella stifle; identified cartilage trauma on ridge of femur below patella with kissing lesion on surface of adjacent patella. Debridement of damaged cartilage and extensive lavage of joint. Post-op rehabilitation at time carried out at box rest for 6 weeks followed by 4 weeks controlled ascending walking exercise. On week 10 TurnOut controlled size paddock. From week 10 continue controlled exercise ascending through the gaits for a further 2 months then re-assess.

Horse taken on under care of Jenna Greyson from August 2008 - Stretches used to encourage flexibility and suppleness of muscles. Marked improvement seen however unable to take pressure of hunter so removed from work in the field. Kept working in school and hacking to maintain mobility - not capable of larger competitions but was taken to a few local SJ (2'3) and dressage (prelim) shows. Therapist Chiropractor used for maintenance from September 2008 on a 3 monthly basis.

From January 2010 Jenna Greyson started GATES Equestrian. Therapy equipment - PEMF Rug, Magnteic Wraps, Massage Boots, Solarium, Stretches and regular 5 monthly physio sessions all now used on Flag to improve circulatory system, enhance healing, produce more mobile connective tissue as well as providing a more relaxed well balanced horse. These regular weekly sessions have seen Flag return to full work and compete at higher levels - now jumping 90cm+, competing in Intro ODE, and BJ British Novice.

India

5yrs SportsHorse TB - Previously SJ - Now being brought back into work

India – came to GATES 16th March 2011 – History = Fragment of bone became infected (caused by trauma kick in field) – surgery required to remove bone and Ultrasound undertaken to check for other issues with Suspensory Ligament. The surgery was undertaken 19th January 2011 and then India was boxrested.

From 17th March 2011 = The plan as advised was for the next few weeks to be hand walked. The walk to start 10min hand walking per day adding 5 minutes every week. Try and introduce am and pm walking in week 2.

Move up week by week to 30 minutes of walking/day (can be done as 15 minutes morning + 15 minutes afternoon) then SCAN.

Thurs 14th April 2011 = Results showed negative improvement in fracture and suspensory ligament still with lesions.

Under veterinary advice from Monday 18th April 2011 India to be introduced back into paddock time and continuing walking in hand in ménage ONLY for 10min am and pm.

18th April – 19th May 2011 – India over time was placed into larger paddock sizes and her length of  paddock time increased. Walk in hand in ménage 10mins am and 10mins pm continued for this period of time. Fri 27th April = Review still shows no improvement. Continue to walk in hand whilst discussions take place with what to do.

19th May 2011 – Sarah Goodson after discussion with Vet and GATES Equestrian decided to avoid further veterinary proceedings and to try re-training India to bring back into work. It was stated by GATES Equestrian that ‘Without further veterinary clinical diagnostics it is unsure as to the progress that India can make and there can be no certainty to her future. There can be NO determination on how she will react to the re-training sessions carried out by GATES and (1) nothing or (2) negative outcomes may occur from such sessions.’

19th May – 31st May : India introduced to bridle, saddle, roller and side-reins work done in walk on straight lines and corners. 2 Road sessions introduced during this time. Each session 15min 4 times a week to include walk and 3 minutes trot each time.

June 2011 – 8month period given for re-training of India to bring back into work. India put into normal stable routine – out during day in paddock with companion old retired horse (to re-establish social behaviour with other horses) and stabled at night. Re-training sessions carried out 4 times per week to bring India back into work – work to be inclusive of ménage, road and grass ground. Outcome unknown. India has accepted older companion with greatness and is now more settled in field. Her work ethic has also settled and seems a lot happier in herself for the company.

India will continue to be provided with therapy support throughout her re-training sessions. Therapy is able to support India and ensure she is well-balanced both mentally, emotionally and physically. Therapy will include magnetic therapy boots every day whilst on turnout, plus solarium once a week for 45minutes, and also Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field Therapy Rug once a week for 45minutes.

1 day out on road for 20min total period – 6 minutes trot in short bursts intermixed with walk.

1 day out on grass tracks 10min total period – walk.

SADDLE – Sat 25th June – India was sat on and walked for 10 strides to accustom to weight of rider – Saddle feels as though tipping rider forward and causes India to become too low in the neck as the rider is sitting in wrong position on her forehand.

India is now working long and low in a steady outline on the lunge.

PLAN

India has now done a month of increased work and intensity – Plan Of Action for the next month will be to continue to progress the minutes of trot (adding 3 minutes every week) up to a total of 20minutes trot in each session and make the length of trot sessions intermixed with walk longer in time.

India will also start to bear weight of the rider in walk on a variety of surfaces for a maximum of 5minutes each time – for 3 sessions per week. Time rider on board India to increase over the month – walk ONLY!

  • Week Commencing - Mon 27th June – Sun 2nd July 2011

2 days work on the lunge 20m circle each time to include 20mins total period per session with 9 minutes trot in 3 minute bursts intermixed with walk. Rider added for 5minutes walking around in ménage at end of one lunge session.

1 day out on grass tracks 20min walk total period - 10 minutes without rider and 10 minutes with rider. when being ridden India asked to trot for 10 strides

IMPORTANT NOTE – as India still seems less settled in her head when a contact outline is asked for it brings to question that, now more is being asked of her, whether her teeth need doing ?? – teeth to be checked asap.

Saturday 16th work on lunge was difficult as wind was making India very spooky – spooked at something reared up and spun round catching herself on the ménage fence in the process – graze down inside of cannon bone on near fore leg – antiseptic cream added and magnetic wraps added overnight to prevent swelling – same to be done until swelling reduces and graze heals.

Bit changed to happy mouth straight bar on Sunday 17th July = Seems a lot happier in contact

 PLAN

India has now completed 5 full months (Start of June to end of October) of a structured re-training programme used to re-strengten the limb anatomy and provide a more mechanical horse.

India is continuously showing improvement each week and is coping well with the weight of rider and intensity of work.

From November 2011 through to January 2012 India's work will increase to include more canter work and the introduction of poles, raised poles and possibly small jumps if her progress continues positively.

India's work schedule will now be less precise and will be brought more towards a normal horse being exercised. Work will be 5 times a week.

India is now able to undertake ridden work in walk, trot and canter with the inclusion of a variety of school movements and lateral work.

Months 6,7 and 8 will be less structured and will form a simple exercise regime to tone and muscle India and to produce a more rounded outline accepting of the bit and aids.

Month 6 (November) and 7 (December) and 8 (January 2012) will be inclusive of some lunged and schooling sessions and hack work.  Towards the end of Month 6 and start of Month 7 , should India remain sound in her own nature, some raised poles in trot and canter with the rider will be added. A jump may be tried at in month 7, with further jumping following if this is successful.

As there will now be no structured regime to India’s re-training programme (as she will now undergo a simple daily exercise session) the weekly diary will no longer continue. From this point forward there will be continual photo and video updates to show progress and any notes of importance will be added.

The full extent and outcome of the re-training programme cannot be fully known.

November (Month 6 – re-training)

There is no determination that India’s soundness will hold but at present India is riding strong. India is coping well with pole work and although a little excitable to start has settled well into their inclusion within her exercising.  She is able to trot and canter poles soundly whilst on the lunge and under saddle is riding them successfully in trot.

India is in regular work and during schooling sessions is carrying out simple school movements (20m circle, serpentines) and also simple lateral movements (leg yield)

In the last week of November Pole work is now in trot and canter under saddle and when being lunged raised trot and canter poles have been added.

India will continue to have magnetic and massage therapy once a week at GATES Equestrian and will continue to wear magnetic boots of an evening

December (Month 7 – re-training)

We have progressed to a new bit using a soft metal starter bit by neule schuele. This has produced more salivation and India is working more positively from behind into a rounder and softer outline.

India is in regular work and during schooling sessions is carrying out more school movements (20m circle, 10m circle, figures of eight, serpentines) and also more lateral movements (leg yield, shoulder in, rein back and medium and collected work)

In the 2nd week of December Pole India is now negotiating raised trot and canter poles under saddle.

In the 3rd week of December India is now negotiating small 18” jump – a single fence at a time.

  * VIDEOS OF INDIA RE-TRAINING (carrying out a small single 18" jump) *

http://www.youtube.com/enhance?feature=uenh&v=lmKuEMMVT38

In the last week of December India successfully undertook a small jump course of 6 fences at 18” – she remains fit and sound at this present moment.

India will continue to have magnetic and massage therapy once a week at GATES Equestrian and will continue to wear magnetic boots of an evening

January 2012 (Month 8 – re-training)

India at present is sound and in regular work; she is presently (from 1st Jan 2012) carrying out work under saddle, hacking (both road and farmland) and lunging in all gaits; she is also carrying out: medium work, collected work, rein back, lateral work (shoulder in and leg yield), pole work, raised pole work, work in an outline, and completing a small course of jumps 18”-2ft.

India will now move forward and continue to carry out a normal horse exercise regime with inclusion of all the exercises stated above. She will continue her education and life experience by going to local shows and the beach.

India will continue to have magnetic and massage therapy once a week at GATES Equestrian and will continue to wear magnetic boots of an evening to ensure every chance of success with her hindleg after injury and return to work.

FINAL NOTE - India will now move forward and continue to carry out a normal horse exercise regime. She will continue her education and life experience by going to local shows and the beach.
